Description / Abstract: These requirements cover the construction and operation of stationary and semi-portable dry chemical extinguishing system units. Dry chemical extinguishing system units are intended to be installed, maintained, tested and inspected in accordance with the Standard for Dry Chemical Extinguishing Systems, NFPA 17.

Stationary and Semi-Portable extinguishing system units require a manual means of operating and fire-fighting and are intended to be used for fire-fighting in the vicinity of the hazard being protected in accordance with the manufacturer's design, installation, and maintenance instructions. These devices are:

1) not a part of a system with fixed nozzles; and

2) not evaluated for fire-fighting performance and are therefore, not assigned a fire rating as for portable fire extinguishers.

Hand hose line extinguishing system units are intended to supplement fixed nozzle extinguishing system units or to supplement portable fire extinguishers for the protection of specific hazards for which dry chemical is a suitable extinguishing agent.
