Scope and Purpose
The scope of American National Standards Com· mittee e72 under which this standard has been devel· oped is: The development of standards for electric water heaters covering definitions, methods of test, performance, function, durability, safety, rating, name· plate markings, informative labeling, and installation practices.
This standard applies to household automatic electric storage-type water heaters when all of the following conditions exist:
(1) A rated volumetric capacity of not less than 30 nor more than 120 gallons
(2) A rated input of 12 000 watts or less
(3) A rated voltage or 250 V ac ai' less
The purpose of this standard is to establish a uniform procedure for determining the performance of household automatic electric storage-type water heaters under specified test conditions and to establish certain minimum requirements.
All water heaters tested under this performance standard must bear evidence of compliance with the safety and construction provisions of ULl74, Safety Standard for Household Electric Storage-Tank Water Heaters, Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc, May 1, 1970, 3rd ed, revised.
Each specimen of water heater (and additional parts if necessary) to be examined, or tested, or both, shall be selected at random from the routine production and shall be representative as to construction and adjustment.
